'Dollhouse' (2.13) “Epitaph Two: Return” – Review

In this last episode of Dollhouse, we go ten years in the future to 2020. Yep, I’d be an old gal by then, but not yet ready for my walker. I can take on the butchers that rule L.A. And do they rule. Zone and Mag get out with Caroline by the skin of their teeth and then get captured by the last stand of Rossum’s men and taken to Neuropolis. Echo and Paul are already there and cause havoc in their rescue of the inhabitants and killing off Clive 2.0 and Harding.

Everyone, that is - Echo, Paul, Topher, Zone, Mag, and Caroline - get back to the safe house, only to leave again with Victor and his gang, Priya and her and Victor’s son T, and Adele to get back to the Dollhouse in L.A. There they find a fire fight with butchers, and Mag is paralyzed while Paul is shot dead.

    Saying ByeSaying Bye

Alpha is running the house and is apparently a good guy now. Topher makes his bomb to reset everyone, and echo has her day of reckoning about Paul. Priya and Victor/Anthony reconcile and T gets to know his father for the first time. Once the bomb is set off, Adele helps all the dolls up and Zone helps the former Caroline. Before Echo dismantles the chair, she finds a cassette addressed for her, which she downloads. It is Paul and she tells Paul that they’ll work through her reticence to make room for him together. She goes off to her pod as Priya and Anthony read to their son, T.

This wasn’t that satisfying for a series ending for me. They left Adele and Zone out in the wild, Paul is dead, so what if his matrix was downloaded into Echo. She’ll still be a virgin forever. Where the heck is Alpha and is he now back to being a sociopath? What about Dominic? He’s not in the Attic anymore, but where is he? Then there is Whiskey. What happened to her? She’s not dead is she? Being in the doll state she isn’t capable of defending herself against the butchers.

I’m glad to see that Priya and Anthony get their HEA (happily ever after), but pissed that Echo got ripped in that department. Priya and Anthony have a child, and therefore you want to see both parents survive, but I still wanted an HEA for Echo and Paul. They deserved it after all they’ve been through. Plus, who knows what little Echos’ and Pauls’ could be like after the inevitable procreation.

Alpha is a good guy? WTF? Did I miss something major, because I’m thinking yeah… the last time we saw him he was trying to kill Echo, and love her in his own sick and twisted way. Seeing Alpha all potty-trained is wiggy.

So overall, not their best episode, but then I guess you have to cut corners to get a storyline to wrap up in one episode.
