'Chuck' (3.9) "Chuck Versus The Beard" – Review

When a television show's star decides they want to try their hand at directing, it usually means that said actor is going to be missing for the duration of the episode, so that they can focus on directing duties instead. Such was not the case with this week's episode of Chuck, as Zachary Levi was not only directing this week, but was still front and center in this very funny and insightful episode.

After seeing Sarah almost killed last week, Chuck hasn't been able to flash. Since he's not working at 100% capacity, Shaw decides to leave Chuck behind to work his day job at the Buy More while they go investigate someone from The Ring who is staying at a nearby hotel. The real threat, however, is soon revealed to be at the Buy More, and they have a helpless Chuck in their grips.

Hell To The YeahHell To The Yeah

This week's episode of Chuck was almost a return to form to the past two years. Without his flashes working, Chuck's just a regular guy again who finds himself going up against some bad guys; it was nice to see this bumbling nerd once again rise from the ashes. The episode was also heavily focused on the Buy More rather than our usual spies, which was surprisingly a fun and welcomed change of pace. After misinterpreting what "terminated" means, Lester reveals to the staff that they're all going to be fired. The staff decides to revolt and holds the store hostage by barricading the doors and brandishing toy guns. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention the return of Jeffster? I don't know why, but whenever those two guys get together, I get chills, become giddy, and find myself laughing and singing uncontrollably at the spectacle.

The big news coming out of this episode is that Chuck finally revealed to Morgan the truth about everything. I was actually shocked that the writers finally had Chuck spill the beans. I was sure that they'd dance around the truth so that Morgan still didn't know what was happening, but they actually had Chuck not only reveal to Morgan that he's a spy, but detailed exactly everything that's happened since the show began and how even Sarah and Casey are spies too. I don't think this will change much with the overall show, but it was still nice to see Morgan accept everything so that this story point never has to be danced around again.

Other big revelations include Casey being called by someone from The Ring who he obviously knows, plus Chuck finally owning up to Morgan (but more importantly himself) that he does indeed truly love Sarah…now if only he'll tell her, they get back together, and Shaw is kicked to the curb. Meanwhile, big news with Casey there, as it may suggest that Casey was evil at one time; it would explain why Chuck flashed on a name that Casey was referred to just recently.

    Great!

I’m giving the same score too for that one. It is fun really. I wonder if what Chucks’ going to do if what he faces is the legendary Chupacabra. Will he find some thrill for that or would he be just flashing it elsewhere.
