G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
'Avatar,' 'GI Joe,' and 'District 9' Looking To Become Franchises

Well, as Meat Loaf once put it, two out of three ain't bad. Word is going around that there are several sci-fi/fantasy properties that are looking to turn into franchises with the release of a new film. First up is word that a new GI Joe movie might be in the works and that Zombieland's Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will be writing the script. Up next, while answering questions at a screening of Avatar, he revealed that "Yes, there'll be another" in regards to another film set in the Avatar universe. And finally there's word that director Neill Blomkamp might be working on a new District 9 film, but that it might not be a sequel as initially thought.
"The concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet," says the helmer, who points out that if such a film did happen it won't be his next. "All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn't mind messing around with it again. I'm open to it if the story works and there's a reason to do it. And [(Sharlto) Copley's character] Wikus is so funny to me, I'm very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond District 9] it's more of a traditional film but if you go backward I'd be intrigued in that. I'm not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting."

Dennis Quaid Ready For A 'G.I Joe' Sequel
Tue, 09/22/2009 - 07:53 — Jason Van Horn
Dennis Quaid is ready for a G.I Joe to start happening, as he feels director Stephen Sommers really nailed the film they were going for. "I'm definitely on board if they do another one," Quaid said in an exclusive interview. "I don't know if they have a script yet, but I'm definitely interested."
Quaid does have one request, however, he'd like to see happen:
"I want to get out of the pit," says Quaid. "I want to ride a horse and shoot a gun. I want a horse with an accelerator suit."
'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' - Review

In retrospect, seeing Transformers 2 has probably just lowered my standards, but I enjoyed the action and simplicity of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It’s a mindless action movie that is pretty mediocre in every area. It’s still fun if not a little formulaic. If I were a little kid I would be reeling when I saw Duke, played by Tatum Channing, and Ripcord, played by Marlon Wayans, careening through the streets in their accelerator suits. As an adult I’m somewhat underwhelmed.
'G.I. Joe' Sequel Already Being Planned

The new G.I. Joe movie hasn't even been released yet, and based on reactions to the trailers, most fans seem to think it's going to be the worst movie of the summer. Despite that it seems that both the director and stars of the film are locked in for another entry, and director Stephen Sommers even shouted "next summer."
